Terms2Know - Facebook

EdgeRank -- term given to the algorithm Facebook uses to determine what posts/updates should appear in a user’s news feed; takes into account user affinity, weight given to the content and a time-based parameter (along with other proprietary methods and factors) to arrive at a 'rank' for each post
Follow (formerly known as Subscribe) -- way to keep up with/hear from another user without being connected as friends; you will see that user’s public posts and updates in your news feed; beneficial when it comes to celebrities, public figures -- anyone you are interested in but not friends with; can also be used to tweak your news feed to receive the updates you want to see [note: your friends (current and past) are automatically following you; when you unfriend someone, you automatically stop following them; once you allow followers, anyone you unfriend and any friend requests you ignore/delete/hide, all become followers]
Friend -- (n) user you choose to connect and share with on Facebook
(v) the act of identifying a user, choosing to connect and share with them on Facebook
Graph Search -- latest Facebook feature; allows for users to search across content (shared with them) on Facebook – people, Pages, friends, photos, status updates, etc.; users can enter phrases and combinations of phrases to begin a search (i.e. – friends who went to UCLA who live in Los Angeles that like The Hunger Games)
Like -- (n) an option on content (posts, shared links, status updates, etc.) that allows users to show their agreement with/approval of/positive response to said content
(v) the act of selecting that option to openly show your agreement with/approval of/positive response to the related content
Networks -- connected affiliations based around a shared workplace or shared educational institution; pre-existing groups you can elect to join, provided that you have a valid email address associated with the network (your school or workplace); users cannot create new networks, the suggested means of connecting being a Facebook Page or group
Pages -- in short, a Facebook profile page for businesses, organizations and brands; serves as a means of sharing and connecting with users on Facebook; people can ‘like’ a page, opting-in to receive messages, posts and updates from that organization; administrators/creators of pages have access to metrics and analytics – Page Insights
Like -- (n) an option on content (posts, shared links, status updates, etc.) that allows users to show their agreement with/approval of/positive response to said content

Poke -- the Facebook equivalent to tapping someone on the shoulder or waving at them; a way to get someone’s attention or say hello without needing to send a message or leave a comment
Timeline/Profile -- sometimes used interchangeably, both basically mean the same thing – your presence on Facebook; the sum total of your collection of photos, status updates, app activity, life events, news and information; Timeline refers to the most recent redesign of the Facebook profile, with the large header image on top (cover photo); profile is generally taken to mean any page presence of you on whatever social network (Facebook or otherwise)
Wall -- refers to the large space below the cover photo/information section of your timeline where all your posts and posts from your friends are displayed; sometimes used interchangeably with Timeline
